Some few good men
It's a shame for me to just post this now. It's been a week since I had this unfortunate/fortunate situation of traveling.
My husband I took a couple of diver friends off to Subic last November 27, 2010. It was a very smooth driving and no traffic at all. We had another care with us. Unfortunately the back tire on the passenger side burst and we got a flat tire without a spare. Fortunately, the tire blew as soon as the truck stop on the entrance of the SCTEX toll. Two guys came and help us to get the truck out of the way and to the side of the road. These men are Louren Gueco and a certain Jayson. I was worried because of the time that will be wasted (we were on for a day trip of diving), the people who are with me (all foreigner) and the money we have.
Louren and Jayson helped my husband put the gears on to the other car and guided me where to get the tire. Fortunately the vulcanizing shop was just 10 minutes away from the toll. So I walked my way down to ride a jeepney. I went to the first vulcanizing shop and referred me to another shop since he didn't have the tire I needed. Second shop have it and will do the service and get the job done. It cost me Php3,800 for the Pirelli second hand tire and P500 for the service fee. I didn't argue since I needed to go already and follow the guys. Thank you to our friend, Muhammad, who lend us money.
So I got back with the guys and had my tire removed to be brought to the shop. Louren and Jayson asked how much they charged me and were surprised. So, they tried to negotiate with the guys on their dialect which I could catch some words but unfortunately, they said no. Sigh. Anyway, I just want it to get done. We went back to the shop to install the tubeless tire onto the mags. Went back and I saw a guy selling bread. I thought as much as I would love to reward the guys from the SCTEX, I didn't had enough to give. So, I called Louren to pick which bread they want so they could share to the other guys as well. He refused, I was devastated because I knew to myself that I must reward them somehow. I felt obligated because they didn't give me a hard time and they were so nice and accommodating. In short, I have no complaints on the way the performed their job.I insisted on buying bread but he plead not to as they will be in trouble. So I respected them and asked if I could at least tell their boss how grateful I am to have been assisted by them. So they gave me a yellow card.
I promised them that I will text the number and email the office about them. I haven't to this moment but I will. I wanted to share this here because I know that this will make a difference. A difference on how we see people who works at tolls, and to remind that there are still few good men. I wish though that these guys are also existing in Manila. Sigh.
Below are the photos I will keep to my heart and memory. Salute to Sir Louren and Sir Jayson!!!

Disappointed with the Vet Clinic's Doctors
A week after having Max at home, he was weary. He didn't have any appetite, he drinks his pee and have a bowel problem.
We went to an animal clinic just a couple of blocks away from our apartment to have Max checked up and we wanted him to get a shot of rabies and the 5 in 1 shot. I told the vet everything that I could feed him about Max and he said that they will do a test for his blood to see if he have infections or any problem. We paid P2,430 for that.
The next day I called for the results and he said that the tests were fine and said that Max might just be adjusting from his new environment. I believed him but poor Max is getting weaker. I asked him what am I supposed to do because he is still not eating and drinking, vet said nothing. So I started to give him water with dissolved sugar just to give him a little help. Until I asked my husband to help me give him an antibiotic.
The next day, Max's tails is wagging!!! W were soooo happy! Then I thought about the animal clinic how they charged us with so much money and didn't really helped at all. I was so disappointed that the vet said we cannot give him an antibiotic when we were at his clinic. Max started to eat and drink water. His bowel's texture is back to normal. He is alert, happy and well now.
I also wanted to share my experience when Max started to have irritated skin, especially around his testicles. He kept on licking it until it turn so red and the skin is starting to peel of. I felt pity on him so I applied Bioderm Cream on his irritated skin. This cream is a spectrum antibacterial, anti viral and anti fungal. Two days after he sleeps well without forcing himself to wake up and scratch himself.
I am not demeaning any veterinarians, but I got disappointed that the simplest things they can suggest to help the animals would mean so much wasted money. I am not saying what I wrote here is what every dog owner should do when their dogs experience the same... but it worked for my dog.

Max
I posted a blog about my first dog, Gekok, who got lost almost two months ago. On the 12th of September we were doing rounds around the hood looking for Gekok. At the corner of a store made of plywood, there was a dog that looks like Gekok. I asked my husband to stop the car and look at the dog. He's so much like Gekok, he has a medium long body, short, wide paws only that he is white and has shorter fur.
My husband asked me to talk to the owner if they'll have the dog adopted by us. The guy in the store said that the dog is not directly his but a condo owner asked him to take care of him. The condo does not allow occupants to care for medium sized to big dogs. The "adopted" dog's owner have two shi tzus -- Ruffles and Blue. The guy said for me to talk to them but I needed to return the next day as it was already 8pm.
I went back to talk to the owners and I met Tita Maggie. As Tita Maggie opened the door. Ruffles ran to me and I immediately picked her up and she started to kiss me furiously. Blue came next. I told Tita Maggie that our intention with their dog, Maximus as they named him after the Gladiator, were pure. It didn't took me a lot of time to convince her but we were waiting for two hours for her daughter to wake up. Her daughter bought Max at Boracay when he was 2 months old and brought him to Roxas City.
It was 1pm and I needed to head back to our apartment without Max to cook food for lunch. Our apartment is just 5 minutes away from Tita Maggie's condo. We were anxious for her to send us a text message saying that we can bring Max home. It was 4pm when finally she told us to come back and talk to her daughter.
Clay is a sweetheart. She was a very nice person, the family are. So, she interviewed us and exchanged stories about our dogs. She only asked us to do one thing, to take care of Max. We said we will also love him. Her parents said that they will come by our house to visit Max from time to time. It was a request immediately granted. She was teary eyed as we (me, my husband and her parents) left their house.
Max was unease as expected but he ate and drank a lot. We had a little hard time trying to train him. I am proud to say that Max knows when to pee, poo and play. He is still learning and he is happy that he could run, walk and jump.
Isn't he cute??? We love him!

Gekok will always be in my heart
I woke up that day and went straight to our dirty kitchen to get some breakfast. I saw him, he was under a chair and stared at as I was standing at the screen door. He was so cute! I immediately went to him and held him in my arms. I fell in love with him. I showed him to my husband and asked my brother (the original owner) if we could keep him. I called him Kekok -- he was short, a bit long body and have brown short fur. (this was his 5-months old photo. Just finished swimming)
He was too playful and didn't had any problems mingling with other dogs in the house. He slept with us every night and wakes us up with this super cute puppy cry. He was then called Gekok, because every time my husband calls him, he don't say Kekok but Gekok. I liked it.
We transferred to an apartment a year after and he was hesitant because it was only the three of us. He got used to it and liked it. Every night, we would go to the University of the Philippines (UP) to walk or jog with him... this is where we train him to do his "nature contribution". He wears a strap around his chest and we put on a battery-operated light so we could see him as soon as he run to the Sunken Garden. He loved the place and he knows his schedule. He had always charmed the people at the university and usually turn their heads to him because of his blinking light. We would hear short conversations about him like... "Look! the dog has a light" or "Oh, he's so cute!" He also make the bikers turn to him as he have the same light as what they put on the back of their bikes. I don't know how but he would give us the sign that we need to get our asses up and get him his chest strap. We only miss this night out bonding only if we feel really lazy or if it's raining.
When it rains, Gekok will wait for the next evening for the night out. We let him go out of the apartment to pee but he holds his "nature contribution" up to the next evening. If we are not able to bring him out for the second night, I walk him around the block so he'll feel better. One evening, we weren't able to go to UP because the rain was just pouring. Gekok knew what to do.
The next paragraphs are the reason how I came up with the title of this blog.
We were getting ready to close our shop to go to UP. Rain started to pour and we waited for it to stop, it didn't. My husband, me and Gekok went to sleep. At around 4 a.m., Gekok was unease so my husband got up and let him out of the apartment. An hour and a half past my husband went to bed without Gekok. He would usually not go far and would go back home. I woke up at 9 and I was hoping that he was at our doorstep. He wasn't. I started to look for him around the neighborhood and was told by a Barangay Tanod ( a regular citizen that helps around the city ) that he saw him somewhere around ABS-CBN. I walked as fast as I could to get there and started circling around the streets on that area. I had to go back home broken hearted.
The same day, my husband and I looked for him. We still didn't find him. We printed pictures of him and distributed it to Barangays, barangay tanods, tricycle drivers and pedicab drivers. I was on the phone with Compassion And Responsibility for Animals' Tet Ordono and she gave me the number of the person-in-charge of the Quezon City Dog Pound in Payatas. I was interviewed by her about Gekok and offered her help by circulating the same photo we gave to her friends and people who could help us. I was in relief to know that there was no dog similar to Gekok's appearance. I call the dog pound every Thursday to check. They don't have him. I posted the same photos at PAWS' and CARA's facebook account in hope that members will be able to help.
It has been two weeks and five days past. I wanted to be strong but I couldn't. Everyday that he is out there, he is struggling, lonely and crying. Every hour he is starving and getting sick. Every minute he would want to be able to get home, every second.... ( I have to stop writing, I couldn't breathe. I am palpitating)
It has been too hard for me and my husband. We haven't given up looking for him. But every time we go home without him breaks us more. My sigh is different now. I dream about him, think about him... my heart is crying for Gekok.
He got lost in the morning of August 24, 2010. Gekok will always be in my heart.

Cannot understand
My husband and I went out for a late lunch at Mang Inasal, Tomas Morato Branch.
From the parking, we noticed a little girl maybe around 5 years of age and her mom standing beside the wooden wall. She could be asking for money or left overs. The store managers, staff and guard didn't mind them.
We were on line to order our usual pick. A man approached them and accompanied both to the table closest to where they stood. I already understood what's gonna happen. The man was asking the mother what is she doing there with the kid. The mother was saying a lot of reasons and was already teary eyed. Convinced or not, the then man asked, why she would not look for work because she cannot just do that to her daughter. She refused to answer. The man bought food for them and went on to where his friend was sitting and ate his meal.
As much as I pity them, my thoughts were garbled. Must I really pity them or the daughter? Must I ignore them? Would I buy them food?
Personally, I do not like to see any beggars. I only have two reason, it breaks my heart or it makes me angry. True, we are not all the same in terms of status in life but I fervently believe that Filipinos are resourceful. Now, for me, being resourceful does not include begging. It is more harder to see parents using their kids to beg or use them as a reason to beg, bringing your blind grandmother or father into the streets and knock on each cars windows. I bet some of you if not most, will agree that you've seen people on clean clothes asking for money and literally look that they can get a job. Please do not get me wrong. As what I've stated before,,, my thoughts were garbled.
The confusion is, why would a physically fit mother take her kid to beg for food, or an adult relative bring the blind elderly into the streets when I can see people with disability trying to sell stuff on the streets?
I just couldn't figure out what to feel.
